A PLANET IN SPACE IS RELEASING ITS DEBUT E.P., As the Pieces Come Together, and is celebrating with an intestate tour throughout January.
The quartet is thrilled to be bringing its music to new audiences, having already won considerable recognition in its hometown Melbourne since forming in 2007 (playing two lengthy residencies and scoring top billing at the 2008 Eltham Jazz & Blues Festival).
The unmistakable sound of A Planet in Space blends roots, rock, reggae, folk, soul, drum-and-bass, hip-hop, punk, dub, metal and improvisation into seamless, exhilarating musical narratives.
Its unconventional lineup proudly sports two full drum-kits and two lead guitarist-vocalists. The four musicians have all trained classically or in jazz.
As the Pieces Come Together features six tracks which give a tantalising taste of the group’s relentless creativity and celebrated live energy.
In the true spirit of independent music, A Planet in Space built its own studio, PlantOn Studios, in order to record As the Pieces…, and the disc is being released through the band’s own label, Melodious Thump Records.
Its breathtaking cover art depicts the luminous glory of the Crab Nebula, “but we’re really not Star Trek geeks,” assures guitarist-singer Alex Hayes.
“Rather,” he says, “we chose the image to symbolise different strands coming together to form a whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts, which is pretty much how we see ourselves as a band.”
The debut E.P. from A Planet in Space will be available online from January 5. Their interstate launch tour kicks off on Thursday, January 15 at Sydney’s Lansdowne Hotel and takes the group throughout Victoria, Queensland and NSW.
